Conjunctions are connecting words that join words or groups of words.

The single word coordinating conjunctions are:

and, or, but, for, so, yet, nor

Paired coordinating conjunctions are:

both…and, not only…but also, neither…nor, either…or, just as…so

Coordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions connect words or groups of words of equal value. They

connect:

  • Nouns

Example: Jane and Joan walk to school.

Example: Both Jane and Joan walk to school.

Example: Neither Jane nor Joan rides to school.

  • Verbs

Example: Boys run and jump.

Example: They seldom walk or dance.

Example: They either run or race.

  • Adjectives

Example: The movie was comical but vulgar.

Example: The movie was neither comical nor vulgar.

Example: The movie was not only comical but also vulgar.

  • Adverbs

Example: He drives too fast and too recklessly.

Example: He drives not only fast but also recklessly.

Example: He drives both carelessly and recklessly.

  • Phrases

Example: We sell clothing of all sizes, in many stores, and in many locations.

Example: We sell clothing of all sizes, both in many local stores and in other

countries.

  • Clauses

Example: The executive will approve your suggestion or they will reject it.

Example: The executive will either consider your suggestion or they will reject it.

Example: The executive will not only consider your suggestions, but also will consider others.

Example: Just as the executive will consider your suggestions, so they will consider others.
