Prepositional Phrases

Today I will introduce you to a long list of pesky small words that crawl all over most stories, essays and reports … they are called prepositions. I call them ‘pesky’ because it is so hard to remember just how to use them correctly.

Prepositional Phrase
A prepositional Phrase is made up of a preposition, its object and any related modifiers.
Example:
The historic bridge was destroyed by the flood. (‘By the flood’ is a prepositional phrase. The preposition is ‘by’ and the object of the preposition is ‘flood’.)

  • A prepositional phrase can act as an adjective.
    Example:
    The flood of the century destroyed many homes in Grand Forks. (‘Of the century’ is a prepositional phrase that serves as an adjective modifying the noun ‘flood’.)
  • A prepositional phrase can act as an adverb.
    Example:
    The historic bridge was destroyed by the flood. (‘By the flood’ is a prepositional phrase that serves as an adverb modifying the verb ‘destroyed’.)

Prepositions
A preposition shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence. It does not modify.
Example:
The car crashed into the bridge railing. (The prepositional phrase is ‘into the bridge railing’. The noun ‘railing’ is object of the preposition. The preposition ‘into’ connects the noun ‘railing’ with the verb ‘crashed’.)
