Pronouns: Number

Pronoun – Number

Notes

Personal pronouns stand for:

  • first person – the person speaking (I, me, my, mine, we, us, ours)
  • second person – the person spoken to (you, yours)
  • third person – the person or thing spoken about (he, she, it, his, hers, its, they,

their, theirs)

Pronouns must agree with the nouns they stand for in gender, number, and case. In their

possessive form personal pronouns are called possessive adjectives and therefore modify

nouns.

Gender

Gender refers to the classification of pronouns according to sex.

  • masculine refers to the male sex (he, his)
  • feminine refers to the female sex (her, hers)
  • neuter refers to the absence of sex as in objects. (it, its)

Number

Number refers to singular and plural.

  • singular means one person or thing (singular pronouns take the place of singular

nouns) (I, you, it)

  • plural means more than one. (plural pronouns take the place of plural nouns) (we, you, they)

Case

Case refers to the functions that pronouns have in sentences. Pronouns can be:

  • subjective case – act as subject (I)
  • objective case – act as object (us)
  • possessive case – show possession (ours)

Some pronouns act only as subjects (I, we).

Others may act as both subjects and objects (you, it).

Some act as objects only (us, him, her).

Possessive pronouns modify nouns and show possession. They are sometimes called possessive adjectives (her, him, their).
