Phrasal verb refers to a group of words made up of a verb and a preposition which has a special meaning. They are commonly used in informal English. Following is a list of some common phrasal verbs and their usual meanings. The column on the left lists the informal phrasal verbs. The column on the right represents the meaning in more formal English.

Examples:
I will research my topic thoroughly before writing my essay. (The verb ‘research’ is preferred in formal English.)

I will find out about my topic before writing my essay. (The phrasal verb ‘find out’ is used in informal English.)

When writing, I must discard some of the information I have gathered. (The verb ‘discard’ is preferred in formal English.)

When writing, I must throw out some of the information I have gathered. (The phrasal verb ‘throw out’ is used in informal English.)
