Expository Writing Assessment Reports

Writing Essays and Reports

The following studies were conducted to determine effective interventions for teaching and learning to write expository text with a focus on writing essays and reports. The studies included pre- and post testing involving control and pilot groups to monitor and assess student performance. The target population included students in grades four to 12. Two independent researchers conducted the assessments – Professor Rick Freeze and Professor Beverly Zakaluk.

The findings in each study confirmed the effectiveness of the interventions – the performance of the students in the Pilot Groups consistently was higher than the performance of the students in the Control Groups. The students in the Pilot Groups demonstrated statistically higher performance in the post-tests compared to their performance in the pre-tests.

English 2020 writing lessons are based on the interventions, both lessons and teaching practices, used in these studies. The studies indicated students need for a clear understanding of grammar. Hence, the inclusion of grammar lessons in English 2020.
