Introduction: Terms and moral judgements

What moral terms and judgements should people use to resolve moral issues? How are they interrelated? These two questions will be answered through an analysis of five classes of moral terms and judgements.

The first of the five classes of moral terms and judgements is ‘Duty’. The representative terms of this class are ‘duty’ (and ‘obligation’) as well as ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. The class of terms includes: duty, obligation, right, wrong, responsible, forbidden, ought, prescribed, should, permissible, must, may, bound, correct, sinful, moral, immoral, ethical, unethical.

  • Read the Dilemma … every Dilemma is focused on issues related to schools because we are all familiar with schools
  • Discuss the Dilemma
  • Consider the view that is presented … it explains and illustrates the terms and judgements used on the moral topic
  • Apply one or more Moral Principal Value Test to the Dilemma (follow the links)
  • View the Dilemma from the persective of all aspects of moral issues: duty, rights, motive, desert and justice (follow the links)
  • Follow the same procedure to discuss issues of your choice
