Notes

The paragraph is a unit of meaning complete within itself, or a unit of meaning within a longer text such as a report. Paragraphs follow a standard format: introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction states the main idea, which is usually found in the first sentence. The sentences in the body support the main idea and are logically connected to it. Each sentence should be linked, by word or thought, to the sentences that come before and after it. When paragraphs are written this way, they flow because there are no gaps in the logic and no unrelated ideas to side track readers. The conclusion draws the information and ideas in the body together with a focus on the main idea. Sometimes the order of the format is changed for emphasis or variety. For example, placing the main idea sentence at the end of a paragraph can be used to present controversial views. In this case, readers are lead through a logical argument to reach a conclusion.

The Life and Death of a Star

The life and death of a star begins somewhere in space. Astronomers claim that a star begins as a cloud of hydrogen and helium. As the cloud moves about it collects bits of dust and more floating gases. Then the cloud begins to warm as more dust and gases are pulled into it. After a long period of time as the cloud becomes denser, heat and friction cause the atoms to explode. That is how a star is born. The star will burn for about ten billion years as it radiates heat and energy. When the hydrogen begins to burn out the star becomes even larger. At this stage, it gives off a lot of light but not much energy. The star gives off a lot of light but not much energy and dies when it runs out of hydrogen. This is the life cycle of a star.

Transportation

People used different ways to travel in different parts of the world. Many years ago, the horse and buggy was used for travel in Canada. Horses were also used to do the heavy pulling jobs on farms. In northern Canada, dogs were used to pull heavy loads on sleighs. Sleighs could be used most of the year because the ground was covered with snow. In the desert, people traveled on camels. Camels survive high temperatures in the desert.  Because they store large amounts of water, camels can go without drinking for long periods. How people chose to travel depended mostly on the climate where they lived.
