Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading and Writing

Since the primary focus of the program was to help students improve their writing skills, I have posted some writing samples.

Sentences

First, we intoduced them to writing sentences. Foe example, in hte following assignment, the students were required to expand on a simple sentence by adding on of the five W’s to the sentence. Here is an sample.

John climbs the hill every day to keep healthy.

The man cooks carry chicken in the kitchen.

He hits the dog because he is cruel.

05. Leela likes drawing.     (When)   (Why)

Leela likes drawing at the in free time because it is her hobby.

06. Lee Wah feeds his dog.     (When)   (Why)

Lee Wah feeds his dog every day because he is kind.

Edit paragraphs

Initially, we edited some of their paragraphs to show them what their paragraphs could look like after they were edited. The purpose was to demonstrate how editing a paragraphs makes a pargraph more readable. Here is a sample (The highlighted words were edited or deleted).

My favourite sport

My favourite sports are badminton and basketball. When I was six, I started loved to play badminton. Badminton is me and My brother and I love to play it. Now, I am 8. I start to play badminton and basketball, because I’m look big already. I love playing badminton and basketball.

Paragraph templates

Next the teachers introduced paragraph templates to the students which they were required to follow as they wrote their paragraphs. We followed the templates in our feedback comments. Here is an sample.

Yesterday was our school sports day. I woke up early in the morning and had breakfast. After that, I went to school at 7.00 a.m. The school sport start at 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. All people gather in the school field at 7.30 a.m. Many parents invited to come watch sport, a few very important person are also invited to come watch sport competition. They are many sport events like 200 m and 400 m race, relay, long jump, high jump, shot put, javelin and hurdle. The sport day ended at 2.00 p.m. The sport day is very important because it is carried out only once a year.

–          a few very important person are also invited to come watch sport competition. Correction: A few very important people were also invited to watch the sports competition. ( start a new sentence)

Comment: Excellent paragraph! Read your paragraph to correct the word ‘sport’ it should end with ‘s’.

In the final two sessions, teachers required students to work through old exams to make them comfortable with the exam format and type of questions. Here is a sample.
